What’s the best way for Clare coast residents to enjoy this area without crowds? Martina McCarthy, Moher Tours’ local guide, was asked by thejournal.ie. She grew up here and leads visitors on guided walks through Liscannor as well as the famous Cliffs.
What is the best time to go?
McCarthy suggests that you should visit Cliffs of Moher early in the morning, or later in the afternoon, because there are a lot of people who come to them every day, especially during busy summer seasons.
You might need to make sure you have a great time and check the weather forecast before you leave. The cliffs are stunning at all times of the year. You just need to be more cautious in winter. The paths can become slippery if they’re wet, and you’re exposed when it’s windy.
Pro tip: Go to Cliffs of Moher in the evening for a more relaxing experience. The cliffs glow pink at sunset, which is a spectacular sight and quieter than going in the middle or late afternoon.
Where can I park my car?
The Cliffs of Moher visitor center has a large parking lot. You can park your car all day at the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre for EUR8 (children are free) or EUR4 if you buy an off-peak ticket online.
Guerin’s Path is another option. It’s located about 1km from the visitor center and costs EUR5 per head. If you are willing to walk a little more, you can park your car in nearby Liscannor or Doolin.
Pro tip: Park close to Hag’s Head. This is the most southern point on the cliffs. McCarthy says that McCarthy pointed out that there is a small parking lot with a EUR2 honesty container. It’s only a 10 minute walk from the cliffs.
Which are the most important sights to see?
Tourists will be drawn to the visitor center, which is located on the hillside between the cliffs. There are interactive exhibits and videos inside, and there are viewing platforms and protected pathways outside. O’Brien’s Tower is also available for EUR2, which has been at the top of the cliffs since 1921.

Pro tip: Allow yourself time to see the scenery and cliffs properly. Some people only have an hour, so you can take the famous photograph. McCarthy says that those with more time should still get out and explore the area.
What are the best places for lunch?
The visitor center has a cafeteria and a restaurant. There are also picnic tables outside for those who wish to bring their own lunch.
McCarthy recommends visiting Liscannor and Doolin if you have more time. There are many cafes, pubs, and restaurants. These include McHugh’s Rock Shop, Doolin Cafe and McHugh’s Egan’s Vaughan’s and Gus O’Connor’s.
Pro tip: Moher Cottage is located on the road to Liscannor and was voted “best coffee in Ireland” in a Today FM poll. “This is a great place to grab coffee and a snack. Caitriona Conidine transformed it into a beautiful coffee shop and gift shop. McCarthy adds that her husband also owns Considine’s Bar, which serves great pizza on weekends.”
How can I get away from the crowds at the Cliffs?
The Cliffs of Moher coast walk is a great way to enjoy the best views and avoid crowds at the visitor center. The trail follows the coast for almost 20km, passing through farms and other land.
McCarthy said, “The coast walk is so different that you might not even see any tourists at certain points.”
You can start in either direction. However, if you’re feeling fit, I recommend that you start at Doolin in morning, walk the 8km to the visitor center, then continue to Hag’s Head (5km).
It’s a narrow path along a exposed cliff edge, so be cautious with children. It is easy to follow and you won’t get lost.
Pro tip: A shuttle bus runs along the coast from Doolin to Hag’s Head, and back to Liscannor. McCarthy states that the shuttle bus runs the circuit from 9am to the evening so you can walk a portion of the walk before returning to your car.
Are there hidden gems that I should be looking out for?
You can’t go wrong with a visit to the beach if you’re on the Clare coast. You can swim and do watersports at many popular locations near the Cliffs of Moher, including Fanore and Spanish Point. But Clahane is a great place to find a hidden gem.
McCarthy states that Clahane, although busy at Lahinch, is a beautiful little beach that would be well-known by locals.”
It’s a beautiful beach with a lot of rock pools and sand. You can park your car there, and take a walk around Clahane to enjoy the sunset.
Pro tip: Keep an eye out for Wild Atlantic Seaweed Baths. They regularly bring mini “hot tubs” made from old barrels to Clahane. The heated seaweed barrels are large enough to hold two people. You can also just relax under fairy lights and watch the world pass by. McCarthy says that it is one of the most beautiful experiences he has ever had.

Is it difficult to replace a door knob?
Not every door handle is the same

– Are these handles for a lock latch or privacy? Are the latches or locks working well or are they causing problems? Are they necessary to be replaced? This could lead to more DIY-friendly, handy-man intervention.
It’s not unusual for quality door handles to be in good condition 20 years later, but the latches or locks are failing. You might also consider a powder coated finish if your door handle’s finish looks dated.
Removing Door Handles
Most door handles are very easy to take off. Most door handles will be attached to the door with screws. But some may have a -grub screw. Some will conceal hidden fixings beneath the outer roseplate. Some may have double fixs that are a screw from both directions.
Look for concealed fixings, grub screw types, and screw head type.
Visible fix screws may be removed with a suitable driver.
Concealed fix has a cover plate or outer Rose that can either be removed clockwise or slip-on.
European handles are more likely to have a push on covering that will require extra care. The bottom of the cover plate should have an insertion hole. With a small blade screwdriver, you can lift the cover off. NOTE remove grub screws first! You should take extra care as these could cause damage to your door.
The replacement question will be determined by the new handle fittings.
You should think that if DIY is not your thing, then hiring a handyman would be the best choice.

The average cost of renting in Ireland is now EUR1,334 a month, a figure 30% higher than the peak figure in 2008, with figures in the report showing that Dublin rents are up by 10.9% year-on-year. So, let’s find out why is rent in Dublin so expensive.
When you consider move to Dublin or London you try to find out rent in Dublin compare to rent in London. Not surprisingly, Dublin is home to the most expensive areas to rent in the country. Average rent in South County Dublin is EUR2,156 per month, followed by South Dublin City at EUR2,094 per month, Central Dublin at EUR2,016 per month and North Dublin City at EUR1,847 per month. Rents for houses outside Dublin average EUR695, or EUR660 for apartments.
Irish Rents have been rising steadily since 2013, particularly in Dublin.
Here is 10 reasons why:
1. Lack of supply
Stop building homes and eventually you’ll run out of them. We’re building houses at 1970s rates for a population that’s 55 per cent higher than it was in that decade. We’ve plenty of ghost estates – but they were built where they were not needed. Urban Dublin never had much of a problem with ghost estates. In comparison, Co Cork still has 130, and Co Donegal still has 64. No houses means nowhere to buy and nowhere to rent.
2. End of the living-over-the-shop scheme
This was an extraordinarily generous scheme that could have provided more rental accommodation where it was needed and brought new life to moribund town and city centres. Ireland’s urban streets are full of old empty upper floors. The scheme offered 100 per cent tax relief for the cost of converting spaces over shops into apartments. The take-up was abysmal. Buildings’ owners cited onerous regulations, and too few streets were included in the scheme.
3. Tax treatment of private landlords
Without landlords there are no rental properties, and more than 70 per cent of private landlords with mortgages say that the rents don’t cover their repayments. In 2009 mortgage-interest relief against rental income was reduced for the private rental sector from 100 per cent to 75 per cent; the commercial rental sector still gets 100 per cent relief. New measures reinstate the 100 per cent relief but only for landlords renting to tenants in receipt of State support.
4. Incentives for making homes uninhabitable
An occupied commercial property is subject to commercial rates. A habitable unoccupied property is subject to 50 per cent of commercial rates. An uninhabitable, unoccupied property is not liable for rates at all, which may encourage a developer or owner to rip out toilets, lift and stairs – just to be sure there isn’t a tax liability. The Government says it’s going to change this one, but it’s a shocker that it has been going so long.
5. Ending the construction of social housing
Everyone blames the last government for ending social-housing construction and forcing local authorities to rent from private landlords. But the current lot haven’t done much to reverse that. Of the 100,000 social-housing units the Government says will be put into the system by 2020, only 35,000 will be built; the rest will be leased or rented. People on low fixed incomes don’t belong in the private sector, at least not in its current form.
6. Too many small apartments
In December 2007 Dublin City Council changed its development plan to increase the minimum size of one-bedroom apartments to 55sq m, up from the national standard of 45sq m. Recently there has been a clamour for it to reduce the minimum size, which it is proposing to do in limited circumstances. But we already have a preponderance of small one-bed apartments, many built between 1999 and 2004. Too many small apartments means that anything decent is too expensive.
7. Letting the sector deteriorate
Almost 85 per cent of Dublin flats inspected in a three-year programme to root out substandard private accommodation failed to meet minimum standards. Problems included fire safety and rat infestations. Old flats are not required to meet the size rules of new apartments, and the flats inspected were half the general minimum size of 55sq m on average. If these deteriorate so much that they have to be shut down, this will further compound the problem.
8. The banning of bedsits
A bedsit does not have to be a byword for substandard accommodation. The 2013 ban relates to flats that do not contain a bathroom. Taking these units out of the system makes sense in the long term, but the ban has reduced the supply of lower-cost accommodation. A more sensible approach might have been to ban the units from being relet once the existing tenant had left rather than insisting that they be upgraded or the tenancy ended.
9. Political kite flying
The Government has finally announced a plan for dealing with spiralling rents, but the extended public toing and froing frightened landlords. That fear probably prompted many landlord to raise their rents in recent months. Tenants and landlords would benefit if politicians came to an agreement behind closed doors and then stuck to it.
10. Slow pace of construction
Rebooting the construction industry has been painfully slow. The Budget announcement that 20,000 homes would be built on sites controlled by the National Asset Management Agency by 2020 should speed things up, and that 90 per cent will be built in Dublin should ease pressure on the rental sector. But more homes are needed far more quickly. One issue is the use of old-fashioned construction methods. Greater use of modular, factory-built housing, assembled on site, could considerably speed up delivery.
It’s a shame it’s so unknown. But for those who love it and know it well, it’s a great place to live. This is the ideal location for tourists who wish to explore Dublin off-the-beaten path.

Blackbird is my favourite pub in Dublin. Blackbird is my favorite spot in the neighborhood. It’s always my first stop when I go out to Rathmines with friends. Copan is best visited on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays when the DJ brings a dance party to get everyone up and dancing with an exotic cocktail. It is best to reserve a table in advance, especially during peak summer season.
Stella Theater
One of Rathmines most treasured institutions is the Stella Theater. This cinema, which was opened in 1923 is a cultural icon in Dublin. Recently, it was restored and renovated to reflect the glamour of the 1920’s. The Stella, which featured a huge ballroom on the top floor, was Ireland’s largest cinema for a long period.
Although the architecture and design of the building are a piece in theater, it is still fully operational. You can book tickets online and see the list of rolling films. The Stella Cocktail Club upstairs is a highlight of a visit to the theater. It takes the place of the original ballroom.
You can enjoy a stunning view of Rathmines from the bar, as well as cocktails on a small terrace. The theater and the cocktail bar both open daily.
Camile Thai
This is the place to go if you are looking for Thai food in Dublin. Camile Thai offers the best Thai cuisine in Rathmines, using top-quality ingredients and highly skilled wok chefs.
Their mission is to bring people together Thai-style. They make sure everyone is happy with their menu, which includes vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free dishes. They only use grass-fed beef, pork and seasonal vegetables. No MSG is used in the food. It’s a great place to support.
Camile has branches throughout Dublin. The one in Rathmines, however, is my personal favorite. The hours of operation are 11:00 – 23:00.
ICS charity shop
One of Rathmines’ best-kept secrets is the vintage charity shop of The Irish Cancer Society (ICS). This store is not well-known, which is a shame as they have many treasures that people love! This shop stocks a wide range of vintage goods, including clothing, household items, and art.
You’ll not only be able to find great souvenirs of your trip to Dublin at affordable prices but also help a good cause. The ICS is a network of charities that operates shops across Ireland to raise money for different causes supporting refugees or the homeless.
There are also clothing donation banks located in several locations throughout Dublin. You can drop off any clothes that you do not want to bring home. Every day, except Sundays, the store in Rathmines can be accessed from 10:00 to 17:00 and until 20:00 on Thursdays.
Mother Reilly’s Bar
Mother Reilly’s Bar, part of the Uppercross House Hotel, is another bar that deserves to be on the top of Rathmines’ best bars. If you are looking for something different at night, this is the place to go.
Every day there is an event happening here: pub quizzes and stand-up comedy, live music performances or live-streamed sports games. Open mic nights are also available. Dundrum
Dundrum is Dublin’s ultimate shopping spot. Although Dundrum is a suburb, it is so close to Rathmines you can consider it part this neighborhood.
This huge shopping center is home to over 100 shops, many restaurants and cafes as well as 12 cinema screens, a bar and nightclubs. It also has a theater. Dundrum is a great place to keep busy indoors if the weather isn’t allowing you to explore the city.
For the past three years, the center was awarded the title of Ireland’s Most Family Friendly Shop Center. Families traveling with children can enjoy all that Dundrum has to offer. The shops are open from 10:00 to 19:00 every day, while the food court is open from 21:00 to 23:00.
Two Fifty Square
Two Fifty Square, an industrial warehouse-style coffee shop, is a great place to get a cup of coffee to change up the Dublin landscape. The interior is super Insta-worthy with its stripped back elements of bleaches wood, metal and Scandinavian-inspired color scheme.
This place is unique because they roast their coffee beans right on the spot. Two Fifty Square, located just off Rathmines main road, is a quiet spot that’s away from the crowds. It’s the perfect place to relax with a cup of specialty coffee or for digital nomads who are looking for an office for the day.
The cafe also has a dog-friendly area outside. This is a huge plus for dog lovers! Every day, the cafe is open from 08:00 to 18:00.
Rathmines in Dublin 6 is a highly sought-after address. It’s easy to see why. It’s a great location, away from the bustle of the city center, yet close enough to the highway that it is easy to commute. For many, it takes only half an hour.

There are not many parks in the immediate vicinity of this inner-city area, even though it is a very upscale one. There are however many pleasant areas of green close by.
Belgrave Square, a small park located between Ranelagh and Rathmines, has been described as an “oasis” of calm by one Yelp reviewer. There is a playground for children, as well as paths and benches to enjoy the greenery.
Ranelagh Park is located in Ranelagh, which is not far from the center of town. It has a duck pond, playground and Ranelagh Park. Mount Pleasant Square, although occupied mainly by a tennis club, still has a small, public park.
You’re just a short drive from St Stephen’s Green, and Iveagh Gardens.
Rathmines buzzes with great places to eat

This aspect is what Dublin is winning over London.
Let’s say we want to rent a 1-bedroom apartment in the center of Dublin. This would be approximately 1,600 euros in Dublin. The difference is approximately 350 Euros in London. A one-bedroom apartment in London’s city center would run you between 1,900 and 2,000 Euros.
If you are looking to rent a bit further out of the city centre, you can expect to pay around 1,350 Euros. It would cost you around 1,450 euros in London. It is possible that the difference could be smaller. Rent may be slightly cheaper. However, it is important to consider the transportation costs if you live outside of the city centre.
You would pay more if you moved in with your family.
An apartment with three bedrooms in Dublin’s city centre would cost approximately 3,025 euros. The same apartment in the same area in London costs approximately 3,720 Euros. This would represent a difference of around 23%. That’s quite a difference!

Through this, one can go from point A to B… easily. They’re also cheap, with prices depending on how far you are to your destination.
There are also monthly bus tickets that cost around 134 Euros. Like the tram tickets, the train tickets also depend on how far you are to your destination.
London’s transport system is very well-connected. It has an underground train system everybody relies on. Aside from that, there is also an over-ground system and a DLR system. Plus, there are over 700 bus routes and river bus routes.
This maximizes your options when it comes to transportation in London. Train tickets would depend on how far you are to your destination. However, when you are taking the Oyster card, it will cost you anywhere from 131 to 340 British pounds.
This should be anywhere from 150 to almost 500 Euros.
Food
When it comes to meals, we give them to Dublin. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant in Dublin would cost you around 15 Euros. In London, the same meal would be about 17.50 Euros. That is just in an inexpensive restaurant.
Once you explore the mid-range ones, prepare to pay about 69 Euros for a three-course meal. In London, it would be around 70 Euros.For some reason, London is cheaper when it comes to fast-food restaurants. But while it is cheaper, you can never live through life living through burgers, can you?
Utilities
Your total cost of living is always affected by the amount you pay for the utilities. This is your level of comfort. And this is something you can simply not ignore.
Dublin is, by far, cheaper than London in this aspect. And the difference is that huge.
For an 85-square meter apartment, expect to pay an average of 156 Euros in Dublin. This would already include your electricity, heating, and cooling utility costs. In fact, utility costs in Dublin are so cheap. This amount already includes water bills and garbage disposal.
In London, the same amount of services would cost you around 205 Euros. This is a difference of 50 Euros if you think about it. And 50 Euros in Dublin can go a long way!

For every 100,000 inhabitants, there would be about 137 cases of robbery in London. In Dublin, it would be 56 cases of robbery for every 100,000 inhabitants. This is a huge disparity when it comes to robbery cases.
This is also the same story when it comes to cases of assault.
Some contend that victims of assault in Dublin may not be that common. For some, it may be because victims are not as willing to report cases as those in London.
This claim may not be, at all times, substantiated. But it may ring true at some point.
Another factor that may cause the disparity between these numbers is the definition. Definitions of the word “assault” between two cities may differ. This means that not all assault cases in London may be usually considered as such in Dublin.
London has about 730 cases of assault for every 100,000 inhabitants. The city is only second next to Scotland, where there would be 1,487 cases for every 100,000 people.
On the other hand, Dublin has only about 90 cases of assault for every 100,000 individuals. This may be a huge difference when one compares it.
One could probably surmise that Dublin is far safer than London. But it depends on which angle you look at.
Because if we talk of smaller crimes like robbery and assault, yes, Dublin may be safer.
But if we look at homicide cases, Dublin has a higher number than London.
It actually depends on how you look at it.
Because no matter which city you are in, there is always a need to exhibit caution. Without it, one can always be a victim of crimes, even in the safest city in the world.
